Opening Friday May 19th
MAY 19th- JUNE 18th 2006

Inspired by eavesdropping on people's conversations, dreams, hand-painted signs, the naive innocence of religious fanaticism and the blunt and bombarding (mis)use of language in our media-blitzed society, this show can be simultaneously painterly, messy, personal, and political.

Writing, painting, and sculpture are combined to create a world of rag tag signs made out of found wood that convey personal sentiments and snippets of short stories instead of acting as advertisements. The slanting of language is explored through the use of bright happy colors and repetition, influencing the viewer to interpret certain words and phrases with intended sarcasm as well as seriousness.

The phrases are sometimes written using a cut-up technique, similar to those utilized by writer William Burroughs and painter Brion Gysin, to rearrange words in order to create new phrases, allowing chance to take part in the storytelling.

This is Sto's first solo show in New York. He has shown his art in group shows, warehouses, festivals, alleyways, and on bike rides. He is co-founder of Cinders Gallery. He likes a good pie in the face.
